In 2020 our region saw a weeks’ worth of rain fall in just a few hours which severely affected towns, especially Ilkeston. Many communities around Ilkeston were impacted by flooding with some residents having to leave their homes. Since these floods, I have been campaigning tirelessly for greater flood protections in Ilkeston.
It was great to invite Severn Trent to my community office to discuss the progress of the Ilkeston Flood Alleviation Scheme. Severn Trent have committed to spend £42 million in Ilkeston by 2030 on flood prevention and protection measures. This includes a major engineering scheme which will ensure that communities across Ilkeston will not be flooded in the future. Severn Trent are also working with Derbyshire County Council and the Environment Agency on strengthening the town’s flood prevention measures.
It is anticipated that work will begin in 2024 and I look forward to being updated on further progress later this year. I would like to thank Severn Trent for meeting me in what was a productive meeting.
