I am delighted that the Government is rolling out a targeted Lung Cancer screening programme across England. The screening programme will help detect cancer and speed up diagnosis.
Lung cancer is the UK’s biggest cause of preventable cancer with smoking causing 72% of all Lung cancers. Under the programme, which will be rolled out over the coming years, anyone aged 55-74 with a history of smoking will be invited for checks. Each year the programme is expected to detect as many as 9,000 people with cancer, carry out almost one million scans and provide treatment earlier.
Yesterday, in the House of Commons, I asked the Health Secretary whether he would commit to implementing in full the recommendations made in the Khan Review on achieving the ambition of becoming Smokefree by 2030, so we can finally stub out the number one cause of preventable cancer.
