It was a pleasure to take part in an important debate on water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH) and sustainable development.
Access to a safe, clean source of water, alongside basic levels of sanitation and personal hygiene, are essential within the realms of Public Health, both in terms of prevention and protection of infectious disease.
Despite this, the UN estimates that 2.2 billion people across the world don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water or basic handwashing facilities, whilst three-point-five billion people lack safely managed sanitation facilities.
During the debate I urged the Minister to look closely at how we can further prioritise water, sanitation and hygiene through the remit of international development, but how the Government can build on the UK’s track record of action to help to tackle climate change on the global stage.
