It was great to join the British Liver Trust for the launch of their report Liver Cancer – A Call to Action. At the launch, I was proud to support the British Liver Trust’s calls to improve earlier diagnosis and outcomes for patients across the UK and in Erewash.
Outcomes for many types of cancers have seen breakthroughs and improvements over recent years, however, the same progress has not been seen for liver cancer.
Liver cancer is now the fastest rising cause of cancer in the UK. Sadly, only 13 per cent of people will survive five years or more following a liver cancer diagnosis and only 40 per cent will survive for one year or more.
I recently visited a liver unit at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and met the team that are doing a fantastic job delivering exceptional specialist care to people with a range of liver conditions. I will continue to stand up for liver cancer patients in Parliament.
